The Process

Creative Brief

Many of my projects start out as a brainstorm. This included finding a typeface that I found interesting, doing proper research about it, and figuring out ways to apply it and design layouts only using text from it. This was a design challenge for me because it was my first time thinking about text in such a way. However, after designing a page or two, more ideas kept coming into my brain. Each spread came with its own idea that was cohesive but still different from others.

Inspirations

This project especially required me to find inspiration from other type specimen books online. I was able to think differently and try to avoid concepts I saw in these other books in order to make a design that had my own fingerprint. I really like enlarging my type to fill a large space and then identifying certain characteristics using smaller body copy and that's a skill I learned throughout this project. I also can say I enjoyed experimenting with different layouts and finding unique ways to design around my typeface.

Color Palette

The goal here was to design with a strict palette to keep everything consistent. I did experiment with many different colors like red and black, but I really liked having black and gray backgrounds, with shades of purple as accents. It's very important to keep high contrast so you can see the body copy and all the elements for any viewers. For the typeface, I chose KitRounded because it's nice and rounded for display products, while also having a decent body copy style like KitSans. This project definitely tested me and pushed my creativity, while also teaching me a lot about type, ways to use color, visual interest and layouts.
